ABOUT THIS ISSUE

Is there any biblical character (besides Jesus) who captivates our imaginations like this man? A baby hidden in bulrushes on the Nile River. A fugitive confronted by the burning bush of an unknown God. A reluctant leader who dared challenge empire. A man with veiled face. Receiver of the Ten Commandments.

What’s not to love about Moses?

I should say that my sister has a portrait of Moses drawn in #2 pencil (by her hairdresser’s father) hanging above her mantle. In my opinion, it should be in a gallery somewhere, though I doubt that the artist was a believer. The portrait was undoubtedly inspired by Charlton Heston, staff raised to the heavens, calling for the parting of the Red Sea.

Even Hollywood loved Moses. His story is larger than life, but his struggles were remarkably ordinary.  After all, Moses was a man who, by his own devices, lost the opportunity to finish what he’d started.

I think the thing I love most about Moses is that we are all Moses. Lost and rescued, frail and strong, unwilling and willing, made of dust and yet eternal.

In the following pages, may you be inspired to ponder the wonder of his life (and yours), and the goodness of God.
