Sunday School Highways

The First General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene in 1907 emphasized the vital role the Sunday School plays in the lives of people: "It is necessary that each teacher be in possession of 'perfect love' as a definite experience, that each pupil may have a living object lesson." The Sunday School has long been on a journey of communicating the doctrine of holiness.

In 1923, E. P. Ellyson was named as editor in chief of the newly established Department of Church Schools. "Like two faithful oxen, evangelism and education must have their heads in the same yoke, one on one side and the other on the other side, hitched to the same load and pulling harmoniously together to move a load to the same place," stated Ellyson. During his 15-year tenure, Nazarene Sunday School enrollment tripled.

Many Christians today can look back at the love and dedication of a faithful Sunday School teacher for the foundation of their faith.

From the earliest days, most church members were first Sunday School members. There they found acceptance, formed relationships, and heard the salvation message.

In his book Talks Along Sunday School Highways, A. S. London wrote, "My mother started me to Sunday School when I was three weeks old. I did not miss more than a dozen Sundays in attendance in 49 years. I believe in the Sunday School because it brought me to a saving knowledge of the grace of Christ when I was only nine years of age."

General Superintendent Orval J. Nease said of the Sunday School, "Its textbook is the Bible. Its message is the 'good news' of...salvation from sin here and now, preparation for and enlistment in Christian fellowship and service, and the rewards of faithful stewardship here and hereafter." Nearly 2,000 years ago, Jesus chose, equipped, and released a group of laypersons to spread the gospel throughout the known world of that day. The world was transformed as a result of their Spirit-led efforts. Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International (SDMI) continues along that road today.

In the 21st century, the Board of General Superintendents has challenged SDMI to make the Great Commission come alive around the world. "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:19-20a). This mandate places Sunday School in the center of our denomination's calling "to make Christlike disciples in the nations."

"Make the Connection"—Sunday School from past until present is alive and well, inspiring purpose and passion, reaching persons of all ages for Christ, helping them know what it means to live the holy life, and teaching them God's Word.
